Art on the Wall: How to Hang a Painting Perfectly

Untitled Artwork, a dramatic realist abstract composition by Eliran Bar on, 2025

Hanging a painting is an essential part of curating the visual experience in your home. Even the most stunning artwork can lose its impact if it’s hung too high, too crowded, or poorly lit.

A few simple rules:

  • Eye level: Hang the artwork so its center is about 150 cm (60 inches) from the floor.
  • Lighting: Soft natural light is ideal, but focused spotlights can enhance any piece.
  • Breathing space: Allow the painting some room to breathe — especially if it’s colorful or detailed.

Bonus tip: Plan gallery walls in advance, and make sure the pieces relate to one another visually.
