About

Oil on canvas, time and layers — the story behind the work

Eliran Bar-On in the studio, Israeli oil painter

Eliran Bar-On

My name is Eliran Bar-On, and I have been painting in oil on canvas for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in this country, I know it closely, and what I live day to day is present in every work that leaves my studio.

I chose oil not out of tradition but out of need. It asks me for time, layers, and decision, and for persistence, and that is exactly what I need.

How a painting is born

When I paint I do not begin from an orderly thought. I begin from a feeling looking for a way out. Sometimes it is afternoon light that fell on a particular wall; sometimes a stranger's gaze that left something in me. That is how my works come to be.

I believe a good painting is not born from what the artist learned, but from what they lived. It is not a conscious choice, it is a response.

The Israeliness in the work

The Israeliness in my work is not a concept I applied from outside. It is there because I am there. It appears in the tone of a figure's skin, in a line that feels rough like Jerusalem stone, in a color that recalls a September sun that will not let go.

There is something particular about painting in Israel in this time. Art cannot ignore what happens outside, and at the same time it cannot be only a reaction to the news. I look for that balance in every painting anew.

The style

My style is expressive, direct, and unapologetic. I do not seek for the painting to look comfortable, I seek for it to feel true. Bold palettes, present texture, and every brushstroke a decision that stays. The works move between biographical portraits and social paintings, between modern Judaica and contemporary expressive work.

Original, not a print

Each of my works is an original oil painting on canvas, painted entirely by hand. No reproductions, no prints. Every painting exists only once, and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

If something in the works spoke to you, I invite you to reach out directly. We can talk about the space where the painting should hang, and I will gladly help find the right work.
